Making Tracks Together: A Free Sustainability Event in Bathurst

Looking for an inspiring way to embrace winter while making meaningful connections? Making Tracks Together – Alasunteka’ti’qw wastewiktuk is a free bilingual event that combines Mi'kmaw cultural teachings, sustainability education, and outdoor adventure in a stunning natural setting. Hosted by the Sustainability Education Alliance (SEA), in collaboration with the Esgenoôpetitj Watershed Association and the Atlantic Canada Climate Network, this Jan 18 event promises an experience that’s as enriching as it is engaging.

Tracks, Teachings, and Trails

Set against the serene backdrop of Daly Point Nature Reserve near Bathurst, this gathering is an invitation to come together, learn, and explore. Whether you’re a teacher, policymaker, non-profit leader, or someone with a passion for sustainability, you’re warmly welcomed to join the conversation.

What to Expect: A Day of Connection and Collaboration

The sustainability event in Bathurst begins at 10 am with a fire circle, led by Mi’kmaw Elder and knowledge keeper Connie Sewell, who will offer an opening prayer and cultural teachings that ground us in the spirit of the land. With hot chocolate in hand, participants will settle in for fireside chats that weave traditional wisdom with contemporary ideas.

Then, the conversation will explore the future of the economy with Jamie Latvaitis from Climate Reality Project Canada, who will explore the concept of circular economics—a sustainable alternative to the wasteful “take-make-dispose” model. Circular economics focuses on reducing waste, reusing resources, and regenerating natural systems, offering a smarter path forward. Jamie will highlight the drawbacks of endless growth and share actionable ideas inspired by Kate Raworth’s Doughnut Economics, envisioning an economy that meets human needs within planetary limits. This session promises fresh insights into building a more sustainable and equitable future.

After soaking up these big ideas, the party gathers for a picnic lunch (snacks and drinks provided)—a perfect opportunity to refuel and connect with fellow attendees. Then, it’s time to roll up your sleeves for SEA’s strategic planning session, where your input can help shape the alliance’s vision for the future.

The event wraps up with an hour-long snowshoe walk starting at 1 pm along Daly Point’s breathtaking trails. This relaxed trek offers the chance to network, chat, and take in the beauty of the New Brunswick winter landscape.

This sustainability event in Bathurst is open to Indigenous and non-Indigenous participants, fostering collaboration and understanding. Whether you’re drawn by the chance to learn, the opportunity to connect, or simply the allure of snowshoeing through pristine trails, Making Tracks Together is a can’t-miss winter experience.
