The Saint John Theatre Company is seeking submissions for its 2025 Script Happens competition. Playwrights across New Brunswick are encouraged to submit original One Act plays by Jan. 15 for a chance to be showcased in local productions beginning late spring.
Stage Your Script
A staple in New Brunswick’s cultural landscape, the Saint John Theatre Company has been a vibrant part of the local arts community for years, known for its commitment to fostering local talent and producing a diverse array of theatrical works. The company not only stages productions but also engages in educational and community outreach programs, making it a pivotal entity in enriching the cultural dialogue within the province.
Seeking New Brunswick Talent
Open exclusively to playwrights residing in New Brunswick, the competition aims to discover and nurture local talent by providing a platform for writers to have their work professionally produced. Between two to three scripts will be selected for production this cycle.
Guidelines for Submissions
-
Originality Required: Entries must be original works that have not been previously produced where tickets were sold.
-
Duration Constraints: The maximum running time for submissions is 45 minutes.
-
Character Limitations: Scripts should feature between 1 to 5 characters, accommodating the intimate nature of the venue.
-
Revisions: Previously submitted plays are eligible for resubmission only if they have undergone significant revisions.
-
Set Requirements: Submissions should consider the small performance space, which limits elaborate set designs and frequent scene changes.
Submission Process
-
Cover Letter: Each submission must include a cover letter containing the playwright's contact details—phone number, email, and postal address.
-
Blind Readings: To ensure impartiality, the playwright's name should appear only on the cover page. Each subsequent page should include only the title and page number.
-
Format: Submissions must be electronic and compatible with Microsoft Word. Emails should be addressed to the Act One Committee.
