Over $1 billion is being invested in New Brunswick for clean energy, including Indigenous-led wind projects and modernizing infrastructure to meet future electricity demands sustainably.
Power to New Brunswick
During a major announcement in Dieppe, New Brunswick, on Sunday, Dec. 8, Steven Guilbeault, Canada’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change, alongside Dominic LeBlanc, Minister of Public Safety, Democratic Institutions and Intergovernmental Affairs, detailed the federal commitment:
-
The Canada Infrastructure Bank plans to invest up to $1 billion in wind energy projects led by Indigenous groups.
-
An extra $25 million will support a wind energy project called Neweg Energy, which is a collaboration with the Mi’kmaq First Nations.
-
The North Shore Mi'kmaq Tribal Council is getting $500,000 to help local Indigenous communities start their own clean energy projects.
-
The Belledune Generating Station is switching from coal to biomass energy, with $3.6 million allocated to study if this is feasible.
-
The Point Lepreau Nuclear Station may add up to 600 megawatts of energy from new, smaller reactors, with $25 million set aside to look into this.
-
Another $1.3 million is going towards improving the Atlantic Loop, a critical power line that connects New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.
"This is a pivotal moment for New Brunswick, positioning it at the forefront of clean energy innovation in Canada,” stated Minister Guilbeault. The investments not only advance the federal government’s commitment to a sustainable future but also support economic growth through new jobs in the clean energy sector.
A Strategic Vision for a Sustainable Future
New Brunswick Premier, Susan Holt, expressed excitement over the collaborative efforts, stating, "This is about more than just power; it's about building a resilient economy that's ready for the challenges of tomorrow."
The investments are part of the Smart Renewables and Electrification Pathways Program, a $4.5-billion initiative by the Canadian government. As New Brunswick strides towards a cleaner, more efficient energy future, these investments signify a robust commitment to not only environmental stewardship but also to ensuring economic stability and growth in the province.
