Remembrance Day: New Brunswick’s Military Milestones

Today, on Remembrance Day, we take a moment to solemnly reflect on the sacrifices made by soldiers in the wars that shaped our nation. New Brunswick, with its rich historical narrative, is home to several significant military sites and memorials. These sites offer spaces for reflection and education about Canada’s military past. Here’s a guide to some of the most notable military sites across the province.

Saluting Sacrifice

1. Carleton Martello Tower

Built during the War of 1812 to protect against American attacks, the Carleton Martello Tower in Saint John is one of Canada’s enduring structures of wartime defense. Its unique Martello style is characterized by a round, stone structure topped with a cannon platform. This historic site not only offers a glimpse into 19th-century military engineering but also provides panoramic views of the Bay of Fundy and the city of Saint John. Visitors can explore the tower’s restored interior, including its powder magazine and barracks, which capture the living conditions of soldiers stationed there.

2. New Brunswick Military History Museum

Located in the heart of CFB Gagetown, Canada’s second-largest military base, the New Brunswick Military History Museum chronicles the brave history of local military units. The museum showcases an extensive collection of military artifacts, uniforms, weapons, and personal items from various conflicts. Highlights include exhibits on the North Shore (New Brunswick) Regiment and their significant role on D-Day during WWII. The museum is not only an educational resource but also a place of remembrance for those who served.

3. Fredericton Region Museum

While not exclusively a military museum, the Fredericton Region Museum houses important military collections related to New Brunswick’s history. One of the key exhibits is the War of 1812 exhibit, which highlights the involvement of the York County Militia. Artifacts, period uniforms, and weapons give visitors a tangible connection to the local people who lived through these significant times.

4. 104th Regiment of Foot Bridge

This modern bridge named after the 104th Regiment of Foot, which marched from Fredericton to Quebec during the harsh winter of 1813, serves as a testament to the resilience and courage of these soldiers. A plaque and several interpretive signs offer insight into this remarkable feat during the War of 1812, making it a bridge rich in history and a fitting tribute to those who made the formidable trek.

5. Dieppe Memorial

The poignant Dieppe Memorial in Dieppe honours the memory of soldiers who died during the disastrous Dieppe Raid in WWII. The raid, primarily involving Canadian troops, resulted in heavy casualties. The memorial stands as a somber reminder of the high price of war and the bravery of those involved in the raid. It is a place for contemplation and homage, especially significant for the families and descendants of those who participated in the raid.

6. Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Moncton Monument

Although the base itself is no longer active, the monument at the site commemorates the base’s important role during WWII as a logistics hub and training center for air force personnel. The monument is a focal point for Remembrance Day ceremonies in the Moncton area, drawing veterans, families, and community members together to honor those who served.

Each of these sites offers a unique perspective on the military history of New Brunswick, providing spaces where individuals can learn about, reflect on, and honour the sacrifices of those who served in the military. On Remembrance Day, visiting these sites or even learning about them can be a meaningful way to engage with our history and ensure that the memories of those who served are kept alive.
