Magnetic Hill: The Upward Thrill in Moncton

Magnetic Hill, located on the outskirts of Moncton, New Brunswick, presents one of the most captivating optical illusions you'll ever witness. This unique tourist attraction creates the illusion of cars rolling uphill, seemingly defying gravity. If you're planning a trip to Atlantic Canada, it's essential to include Moncton's Magnetic Hill in your itinerary. Here’s your complete guide to exploring this mysterious wonder.

Gravity Defied

The Enchanting Illusion

At the heart of Magnetic Hill is a phenomenal optical illusion. Visitors can drive their car to a specific spot marked by local authorities, switch to neutral, and watch as their vehicle seemingly rolls uphill. This bewildering experience is due to the layout of the surrounding terrain, which distorts the horizon line and tricks the brain into seeing an uphill slope, where there is actually a gentle decline.

A Brief History

The magnetic hill illusion has been a staple of local lore since the 1930s when it was merely a horse cart path that piqued the curiosity of passers-by. Over the decades, it has transformed from a whispered secret among travelers into a full-blown tourist attraction, complete with designated viewing spots and promotional signage. At one point it was Canada's third popular tourist attraction behind Niagara Falls and Banff.

Beyond the Hill

The area surrounding Magnetic Hill has been developed into a hub of attractions that cater to all ages and interests:

  • Magnetic Hill Zoo: As the largest zoo in Atlantic Canada, Magnetic Hill Zoo features an extensive array of animals and offers engaging educational programs.

  • Magic Mountain: Magic Mountain water park is perfect for family fun with its exciting slides, a relaxing wave pool, and numerous water activities.

  • Magnetic Hill Winery: Wine enthusiasts can enjoy tastings and tours, sampling a variety of wines crafted with locally sourced grapes at Magnetic Hill Winery.

  • Concert Site: The Concert Site serves as a venue for large-scale outdoor concerts, hosting international music stars and drawing crowds from across the globe.

Economic Significance

This hill is a vital part of Moncton’s tourism industry, attracting thousands of visitors yearly, from all corners of the world. Eager to witness the optical illusion and enjoy the nearby attractions, this influx of tourists provides a significant boost to the local economy.

Tips for Visiting

To get the most out of your visit to Magnetic Hill, consider visiting during off-peak hours to avoid the crowds. Summer months are particularly busy, so plan accordingly. Whether you’re there to puzzle over the mystifying hill or enjoy a day of leisure at the zoo or water park, Magnetic Hill promises a memorable experience. Don’t miss the chance to be bewildered and amused by one of Canada’s most unusual attractions.

  1. We are from SK. Our daughter and family moved to NS last year from SK. They have visited Atlantic provinces except NB. We plan on visiting them in May this year (dates still not confirmed). We would like to treat them to 3 or 4 days in your lovely province. Can you help us

    1. Hi Lloyd! New Brunswick has so much to offer, and you’re in for a treat. Start with a visit to Saint Andrews by the Sea, a charming village known for its quaint shops and whale-watching opportunities. We’d highly recommend spending a night at the nearby Algonquin Hotel for a truly memorable stay.

Just 40 minutes away, you’ll find Saint John, New Brunswick’s largest city, where there’s always something happening. Explore the many parks, boutique shops, and fantastic dining options—locals rave about Italian By Night, but there are plenty of great restaurants to choose from. For accommodations, consider Chipman Hill Suites, located right in Saint John’s historic uptown.

A short drive from Saint John brings you to the Saint Martin’s Sea Caves, a stunning spot to visit in May. You can even enjoy kayaking there! Alternatively, head north to Grand Bay and relax on the patio at Eastbound Burgers for a delicious bite to eat.

I hope this helps you plan your trip! Let me know if you have any questions.
